FINE & EARLY 1800s COMPLETE FILIGREE BIT / HEADSTALL / REINS SET
1870s CALIFORNIA FILIGREED SILVER INLAID FOLK ART BIT
RARE LEATHER MALE LION CONCHOS / BUCKLE / TIP / HEADSTALL
CANDY STRIPE HORSEHAIR REINS WITH LEATHER ACCENTS
This fine, rare and early piece of Western Americana 1870's California horse bit, leather Lion conchos headstall, and candy striped horse hair rain set is original and complete. This California bit is very similar to the bit on page 128 & 129 in the important (1 of 1,000 cost 0 in 1982) California Bit and Spur book by Lou Kosloff; and is described as a half breed California bit circa 1870's. All the early California bits and spurs were made by skilled Mexicano Artisans who migrated to California and adapted to the California style of bits and spurs. This early hand forged, loose jaw, Folk Art style silver inlaid bit has 8 cut outs; including the known 1800's early "question mark" pattern. The top cutout is for attaching the headstall, and below are cutouts to attach the mouth bar to the filigreed cheek pieces that are 6" long x 1 1/2" wide with silver inlaid stripes and 6 tiny silver decorative conchos; 4 have copper centers, and the bottom 2 have iron centers from the slobber chain mounts. The lower cut outs are to attached the hand forged Iron swivel rings attached to the reins chains. The inside measurement of the mouth bar inside the cheekpieces is about 5", with a 2 1/2" long mouthpiece that has the original round grooved Iron cricket. The hand forged Iron chin strap, double slobber chains and swivel rein chains are complete and original.
The fine tan leather headstall straps have top and bottom borders with a center panel embossed with a popular leaf and grapes motif; and is finely stitched to an inside dark leather liner. This is a single ear style of headstall that fits on the top of the horse's head, and spread the top strap to circle one of the ears and hold the headstall in place. South of the border leather had a horrible tanning process that did not preserve the leather very well, and would self-destruct in almost no time. That is one reason why these old leather headstalls are so rare to find in fine condition. In addition, the liner and outer leather gets wet from the horse's sweat, and tears, or disintegrates over time; and is the hardest leather horse gear to find in good, undamaged condition. Both the liner and outside embossed leather are both in fine condition. The headstall has 5 early and rare 1800's period Male Lion head with flowing hair tooled leather conchos; 2 large 1 3/4" for the bit loops, 2 1/4"small Lion head conchos to secure the single ear strap, and a 1 1/2" medium Lion head concho as a sliding belt keeper. Note all 5 Lion conchos are hand tooled, formed over a wooden insert inside, has a leather backing, and an outside strip of leather that is formed as a border in front, and hand stitched to the backing. All the Lion conchos have the same copper harness rivet affixed to the back of the wooden insert; and The 2 large and medium conchos also have the headstall pass through a thin strip at the back to keep them facing outward and not rotate. The 2 smallest conchos can rotate freely and have the same original copper harness rivets that create about an extra 1/2" between the back of the leather concho and the inside of the flared copper rivet as the top headstall leather is thinner than the thicker leather that secures the bit loops. The headstall is about 21" long on each side when hanging, and is in remarkable condition; and dates to the same period as the bit; i.e., the last quarter of the 19th century. The Lion is a known motif found on 1800's South of the Border Silver conchos; and symbolizes strength and a mucho macho persona. Leather conchos are extremely rare; and I have only seen one other compete leather Lion concho headstall. The hand stitched leather buckle has a scalloped border with punch dot decoration, and center panels with line tooling. The hand stitched leather end tip also has a scalloped punch dot border with a decorative tooled center panel.
The twist braided brown and black 2 color candy striped closed horsehair reins are also period, from the late 1800's. The reins are made from 6 strands of twist braided horse hair with alternating 2 strands of brown, 2 strands of brown & black striped, and 2 strands of black horsehair to create a fancy candy striped pattern. They are purposefully made from tail hair (vs. mane hair) to make them somewhat prickly (like mecates) to make the horse more responsive. Each side of the 32 1/2" x 1/4" diameter long reins have the early hand braided tan leather loop and end knot style, a mid-section braided slip knot, and a hand stitched leather covering for the reins to attach to the saddle horn. There is also a fancy Alomar style knot tied into the reins for decorative purposes and/or to shorten the reins.
It is extremely difficult to find a complete original 1800's, 125 - 150 years old matching set with a period bit, headstall and horse hair reins. All these pieces have the same period age, condition and style; and have the correct "look". These characteristics makes this a very rare and desirable set; especially on a late 19th century matching set. The leather headstall is in fine condition, especially for it's age; has a nice tan color, is supple, with a light aged patina. The only exception is one bit connecting lion head concho shows a darker coloration stain on the snout; and, as expected, a darker color on the top of the reins leather from genuine use.
This is a Rare, handsome, matching leather Male Lion conchos headstall, California bit and period candy striped horse hair rein set with overall quality with a nice classic look; all in excellent, original condition. This set would fit into any Western, Old West, Western Americana, Wild West, Charro, Vaquero, Cowboy, Buckaroo, Equestrian, Bit, Bridle, Headstall, Saddle, South of the Border, Mexican, Mexico, Folk Art collection and investment as a decorator, wall hanger and conversation piece.

SELLER'S RETURN POLICY
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
EBay customers are protected when they are an eligible buyer, complete a purchase of an eligible item on a eBay's website, and purchase the item on eBay by using the "Pay Now" option, third-party checkout or an eBay invoice in one lump payment with a PayPal approved financial business. Buyers must keep their PayPal account in good standing. Buyers must show good faith conduct with the seller. Improper good faith conduct can include, but is not limited to, any means by which a buyer can attempt to unjustly benefit from the Seller's Terms & conditions or eBay's Buyer Protection plan. Moreover, good faith conduct does not include buyer's remorse, regardless of the reason. Returns will not be accepted such as changed my mind, Found a better price, Just didn't like it, Ordered by mistake, Arrived too late, etc.. Returns will not be accepted and buyers will be reported to eBay when buyer makes false claims such as doesn't match description or photos, doesn't seem authentic, Doesn't fit, Wrong item sent, Missing parts or pieces, Doesn't work or defective, Arrived damaged. If you wish to take advantage of any of the issue resolution options available from the seller, you must have the business courtesy to discuss any potential issue within 3 days of receipt, and gain agreement with the seller prior to requesting a return through eBay, leaving feedback or initiating any online dispute process. By doing so, buyers commit to negotiate in good faith, and that they have not initiated any other form of resolution processing; including eBay / PayPal dispute process or credit card charge backs, or purchases where you have been or may be compensated by a third party. Possible buyer / seller resolution examples are: if seller and buyer agree that an item is significantly different than described and photographed, exchanging an item for a different item from the seller (whether listed or unlisted), credit from the seller against any current or future item, adjustment, trade, return, or any other arrangement that is mutually agreed upon between the seller and the buyer, and confirmed in writing via eBay's email system. These options are designed to expedite resolution of any potential issue quickly, easily and amicably, in lieu of eBay / PayPal on-line dispute resolution process which is lengthy, laborious, and allows decisions to be made by a 3rd party instead of the principals; i.e., the buyer & seller. Due to a myriad of International and U.S. Federal, State, Territory, County, City or Local law(s), ordinance(s), restrictions(s) or regulation(s), some articles shipped via U.S.P.S. may have restrictions and / or regulations that may apply to your article(s) shipped to a U.S. address. Buyers are responsible for knowing if any International, Federal, State, Territory, County, City or Local law(s), ordinance(s), restrictions(s) or regulation(s) may apply to your article(s) shipped to your ship to your address; and buyers are responsible for any loss if any prohibited or restricted item(s) shipped to your ship to address is confiscated for any reason. Any item returned must be pre-approved by the seller and received by seller within 7 days from receipt. If a buyer claims the item is damaged in shipping, it must send photographic proof on eBays email system, gain agreement with the seller, and item must be returned before buyer enters a feedback comment and before any exchange, credit or refund is issued. Buyer must use appropriate shipping, delivery confirmation and / or signature confirmation (items 0 ) and/or insurance at the buyers expense. Restocking fee, partial refunds and refunds are negotiable when buyers are dealing in good faith.
