FINE ANTIQUE 5 COLOR SEQUINED BURGUNDY VELVET SOMBRERO CIRCA 1930
This is a Fine Fancy Antique Burgundy Charro / Charrita sombrero with hand embroidered 6 color flower sequin patterns and silver pitiado decorations, circa 1930. This sombrero measures about 23" measuring the curve from front to the back of the sombrero, and about 21" side to side. This sombrero is made of high quality dark burgundy wine colored velvet over a woven straw base. Note the lighter color in the full sized images are in direct sunlight; the actual dark burgundy wine color is as shown in all the other images. The sequins are gold, silver, pink, blue, green and clear. The silver colored pitiado cord is made from thin flat wire hand wrapped around a cotton core, with 2 strands woven into a chevron pattern to make one chord. There are 5 of these cords woven into a larger chevron pattern hat band at the base of the crown. The 6" tall crown has 4 indentations on the top, with hand sewn sequins in a blooming Rose pattern in the front and back, with vines, leaves, and rose buds at both ends, with silver pitiado cord decoration top and bottom borders and horseshoe designs at the sides. The top of the brim is embroidered in 4 leaf designs using silver pitiado cord. The brim has X patterns around the top and bottom edge, with sequin decorations. The sequined underside of the brim would be very visible when wearing the sombrero and mounted on a horse, as in a parade or Charreria` (Mexican Rodeo). This underside of the brim is sequined in 4 blooming Rose patterns in the front and back, with vines, leaves, and rose buds at the ends; 2 in pink sequins, and 2 in blue; en suite with the crown. The inside of the sombrero retains it's original purple silk lining, and the unmarked 1 1/4" wide sweat band is still intact, but in poor condition. This could be restored if desired, but has been left in original, untouched condition. There is also some accumulation of dust in the sequin patterns that could easily be cleaned if desired, but has been left in untouched condition. There is no size label, but the inside measurement front to back is about 7 7/8" and about 6 3/8" side to side. Of the hundreds and hundreds of hand sewn sequins applied, I can only find 2 or 3 that are missing. This is a Fancy, eye catching Sombrero was made South of the Border, down Mexico way, with overall quality with a nice classic look; all in fine, original, untouched condition that could still be worn today. Without a Maker or Retailer's mark, sombreros are difficult to date. The decoration is similar to motifs from the Charro revival period of the 20's - 40's; so I would date this to 1930. This would be perfect for any Western, Old West, Western Americana, Charro, Charrita, Vaquero, Cowboy, Cowgirl, Hat, Sombrero collection, or use as a decorator, wall hanger, costume or conversation piece for Cinco de Mayo, parades, Charreria`s, Rodeos, et al.
